Distinguished and Famous people from Williamstown
📖 Ada Cambridge
Ada Cambridge lived in Williamstown during her husband George Cross's service at Holy Trinity, beginning in the 1890s. A novelist and poet with an established writing career, she combined literary work with the obligations of a clergyman's household. The vicarage provides a specific local setting for a life that moved through several Victorian towns and later returned briefly to England. Her books and poetry reached readers beyond the parish world. Williamstown's connection is a substantial period of residence, with writing continuing alongside the everyday demands of family and church life.
🏛️ Steve Bracks
Steve Bracks entered the Victorian Parliament through the Williamstown by-election in 1994 and represented the electorate until 2007. He became premier in 1999, also holding the multicultural affairs portfolio through his premiership. Earlier parliamentary responsibilities included treasury, employment and tourism roles. Williamstown's connection is electoral representation across the years in which he moved from opposition to government leadership. His parliamentary record makes that association precise, linking the local seat with decisions and responsibilities extending across Victoria. A Companion of the Order of Australia followed in 2010.
🤝 Wilma Robarts
Wilma Dawn Robarts received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2024 for service to the Williamstown community. Her work at Holy Trinity included two decades as vicar's warden, parish leadership, fundraising and a community lunch programme. She also established the Ada Cambridge Book Group, linking contemporary community activity with the parish's literary history. Teaching and volunteer English tutoring formed further parts of her service. Her recognition gives a name to the sustained organising behind shared meals, meetings and local activities—work whose value is often most apparent to the people who depend on it.
