Williamstown, a historic seaport town situated in the western suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, has a rich and fascinating history.

Early History

The traditional owners of the land on which Williamstown stands were the Yalukit-willam clan of the Woiwurrung people. They called the area 'Gellibrand Point' and used it for fishing and hunting.

The first Europeans to explore the area were members of the John Batman expedition in 1835. However, it was not until 1837 that Williamstown was officially founded by Governor Richard Bourke, who named it after King William IV.

Port of Melbourne

Williamstown became an important port for Melbourne, with ships from around the world stopping there to unload goods and passengers. The port was also used as a quarantine station for ships arriving with sick passengers or crew.

During the gold rush in the 1850s, diggers would arrive at Williamstown and proceed up the Yarra River to Melbourne. This led to the construction of a railway line between Williamstown and Melbourne, which opened in 1857 and was the first railway line in the state.

Shipbuilding and Industry

Williamstown was also an important centre for shipbuilding, with several shipyards operating in the area. One of the most famous ships built in Williamstown was the HMVS Cerberus, a steam-powered ironclad warship that was launched in 1868 and is now a popular dive site.

The town also had a thriving industrial sector, with industries such as engineering, brewing, and textiles operating in the area.

Significant Events

Williamstown has been the site of several significant events in Australian history. During World War II, the town was an important naval base for the Royal Australian Navy, with many ships being built and repaired in the area.

In 1954, the Olympic Torch passed through Williamstown on its way to the Melbourne Olympic Games.

Another significant event in Williamstown's history was the West Gate Bridge collapse in 1970, in which 35 workers were killed. A memorial to the victims now stands in the town.
